What to Consider Before Buying a Stairlift

What to Consider Before Buying a Stairlift

A stairlift quite literally takes your mobility to the next level, making it an excellent investment for your home and a superb improvement to your quality of life.

As it is a significant purchase, you’ll want to ensure that you consider everything before buying. To guide you through purchasing a stairlift, we have put together this useful piece covering the main things to think about beforehand.

Platinum Ergo Straight Stairlift

What should you consider before buying a stairlift

New or secondhand

Brand new stairlifts will give you that assurance of quality right from the start, safe in the knowledge that you’re the first to use it. There is often more room to customise from the very beginning with new stairlifts, while with reconditioned or secondhand, you are choosing from the options available at the time.

However, there is a real market for high-quality reconditioned stairlifts which can reward you with a safe, reliable stairlift if you’re on a budget.

Here at Ideas in Action, we provide both brand new and reconditioned options for our customers. We are so confident in the quality of our reconditioned stairlifts that we provide a minimum of six months warranty on all options.

Consider carpets

If you can, have a new carpet fitted before buying a new stairlift otherwise you will need to have the stairlift removed first before the carpet is replaced, and then reinstalled afterwards. These stairlift installation and reinstallation charges on either side of the carpet fitting can add extra cost.

With a little foresight, installing a new carpet before a stairlift installation is the best option for minimal disruption and expense.

Straight or curved

The shape and configuration of your stairs will depend on whether a straight or curved stairlift is most suitable. For example, if your staircase is straight then a straight stairlift is best. If your stairs curve, have corners or change direction in any way, then a curved stairlift will be recommended. Ensure you get the right product for your home by consulting with a professional such as Ideas in Action.

Optional extras

Comfort and safety are important if you’re using your stairlift every day. Armrests, seatbelts and safety sensors are all ways you can personalise your stairlift to make it a more comfortable and reassuring experience. Some products even come with a backup DC power option which allows the stairlift to take several trips even during a power cut.

Choosing a reputable company

A stairlift is a big investment to vastly improve your mobility. That’s why it’s important to only purchase these products from a reputable and well-reviewed company. You should ensure that your chosen company has the right experience, good warranties and a wide range of products so you can be confident that you’re getting the best service and product.

Accreditations are also important. Here at Ideas in Action, we have decades of experience as a mobility company, along with accreditations to BHTA, Motability and Trading Standard’s Approved Code Scheme for your peace of mind.
