What happens when a stairlift is installed?
There will come a point in each person’s life where stairs pose a bigger challenge than they once did, to protect yourself from injury and to reduce the strain on your body most people have a stairlift installed. This raises a lot of questions and many people are anxious about such an addition to their home. To put your mind at ease we have compiled a brief guide to the main questions people have about stairlifts.
The installers
As with any work person visiting your home, you need to know that they are who they say you are and that you can trust them to be in your property. The main way to do this is to check that they have identification with them pertaining to the company they work for, if you have any doubts – whether it’s because they don’t have a badge or it doesn’t look real – then ask them to wait while you confirm with their employer, if they are genuine they will be happy to wait. Usually you will be informed of a time to expect the work men to arrive.
Once you’ve confirmed they are who they say they are you can let them get on with their work. If you’re feeling kind they might appreciate a cup of tea for their efforts!
How long does it take?
Having never had a stairlift installed before you might be wondering how long the work will take, something so large must surely be complicated and lengthy to install, right? Wrong, a simple stairlift can take just a couple of hours to fit, while a more complicated one can take up to four hours – it all depends on whether your stairs have any curves and how long they are.
The adjustments
Before your stairlift can be installed it will need to be established whether it will actually fit and operate properly in the existing space in your home. Things you should consider are how much space you have running up your wall, if you have a window sill which protrudes it may need taking back, and any large handrails on the stairlift side might need removing to make space for the chair of the stairlift if blocks the path. Either way, these adjustments will be minor and can be established long before you purchase your stairlift.
How much damage will it cause?
This is one of the biggest worries but your fears can be put aside by the fact that there is actually very little damage caused by the installation of a stairlift. The brackets rest on the stairs themselves separate from the wall, and while the brackets need to be fixed down it will only mean a few small drill holes. Once installed those holes won’t be seen and the stairlift will be an integral part of your home.
Get the right lift
The key to a successful installation is to choose the right stairlift for you and your home. You can have a simple lift for a simple staircase or something more unique when you’re stairs go around a corner. The chairs themselves are also an important thing to remember – if you need a larger seat the brackets will need to be further from the wall so it’s worth keeping in mind. Essentially these are the details which will be established before you make a purchase.
