Do I need to tax my mobility scooter?

Do I need to tax my mobility scooter?

It’s a very common query. Thankfully, the experts at Ideas in Action are here to answer all of your mobility related questions.

Do I need to tax my Mobility scooter?

No, you absolutely do not need to tax your mobility scooter. Even if the front of it resembles a motorcycle (like some of our popular models do!) you have never been required to tax your mobility scooter in the UK like you would with a car.

However, in some instances you will be required to register your mobility scooter with the DVLA. Registering your mobility scooter with the DVLA must be done with scooters that are considered as ‘class 3 invalid carriages’. Mobility scooters considered as ‘class 2 invalid carriages’ do not need to be registered.

And what is a class 3 invalid carriage?

This rather outdated term simply means that the mobility scooter meets the following criteria:

  • A maximum unladen weight of 150 kg
  • A maximum width of 0.85 metres
  • A device to limit its speed to 4 mph (off roads)
  • A maximum speed of 8 mph (on roads)
  • An efficient braking system
  • Front and rear lights and reflectors
  • Direction indicators able to operate as a hazard warning signal
  • An audible horn
  • A rear view mirror
  • An amber flashing light if it’s used on a dual carriageway

Generally class 3 scooters are larger, with longer ranges, cannot be dismantled, can be used on the road and are not suited for indoor use. You will be able to find out from your mobility specialist whether your mobility scooter is a class 3 model. If your scooter is found to be lacking any safety features listed above, you could be breaking the law.

How to register your mobility scooter with the DVLA

If your mobility scooter is considered a class 3 vehicle and hasn’t already been registered by the dealer or manufacturer, you must register it with the DVLA. You can do this by completing the form V55/4 for new vehicles or the form V55/5 for used vehicles and sending them to the DVLA. You will also need to provide proof of ownership, including your name, address, and any required proof of identity. In return you will receive a registration certificate, which you must keep with you whenever you use your mobility scooter.

Do mobility scooters need a number plate?

No, mobility scooters do not legally need a number plate in the UK. However, some people choose to display a registration plate on their mobility scooter for identification purposes. The DVLA does not require you to display a number plate on your mobility scooter, but it is always a good idea to have one for identification purposes in case it gets lost or stolen.

Do you need mobility scooter insurance?

While it is not a legal requirement to have insurance for your mobility scooter, it is highly recommended. Insurance can help protect you financially in case of accidents or theft, and it can also provide peace of mind while using your mobility scooter. Ideas in Action, together with Mark Bates Insurance, offer a comprehensive insurance package to keep customers protected.
