Tips for Grandparents at Easter
With the Easter holidays upon us it’s a fantastic opportunity to spend some valuable time with your grandchildren – it might even help out if their parents are working during this time, saving them money on childcare and providing you with something exciting to do with the kids.
Planning
The first thing you should do is make sure you are prepared by planning your day appropriately to ensure everything runs smoothly. This includes looking ahead to check the weather if you’re going outdoors. If you need to travel outdoors and there are showers due then make sure the grandchildren have their raincoats and wellies packed.
Any places you want to go need to be accessible to yourself and appropriate in relation to the age of your grandchildren. If you have a mobility scooter, then check websites and call venues to ensure you don’t arrive there only to be disappointed.
If you aren’t sure about how long the kids are allowed to stay up or what they’re allowed to eat then get the ground rules from their parents. You might be happy to let them eat sweets and chocolates while they’re with you, but at the end of the day they have to go back to their parents who will have to deal with the tantrums and hyperactivity.
Easter Egg Hunt
One of the easiest and most common Easter activities for the kids is an Easter Egg Hunt. This involves hiding eggs around your home or garden if you have one which is big enough – be sure you don’t hide them too well, but provide hints if you want to make it really challenging for older kids. If you hide them in the garden don’t do it too far in advance and check the weather to ensure the eggs don’t get soggy!
Decorate Eggs
This a simple, fun and easy way to keep the youngest grandchildren entertained. You can pick up simple egg decorating kits from most good shops and then let the kids go crazy with their own design on their eggs. If you don’t want to use chocolate eggs, you can use normal eggs and have the kids draw faces onto them to make their own unique egg characters.
Theatre or Cinema
Planning a day out with the grandchildren should involve some form of entertainment and one of the best ways is to take them to the theatre. There are often children-specific shows on around this time of the year to capture their imagination – just make sure you check accessibility for any mobility scooters or wheelchairs if you use them.
The same can be said for cinemas (who generally always have access points such as lifts and ramps) as this is one of the peak times for children’s films. It’s a fun and easy way to occupy them, and if you keep your eye out for deals it can also be a cheap one too!
