Your Guide to the Different Riser Recliner Motor Options

A riser recliner gives you the comfort of a cosy armchair while making it easy to stand up, gently tipping the sitter forwards using a motorised system.

If you’re shopping around for a riser recliner, you may have noticed that different models come with different numbers of motors, namely single, dual and quad. But what do they all mean?

The team at Ideas in Action is here to help clarify. In this article, we will guide you through the three main types of motor for these chairs so you can choose the most appropriate option.

Single motor

Single motor riser recliners are the most basic models on the market. They operate with a single-action motor that moves the backrest and footrest at the same time.

With one motor operating both, they cannot move independently of each other. As such, there are fewer positions the sitter can achieve, and reclining and rising sometimes may be the only options on the remote.

Some users enjoy this simplicity while others require more flexibility from their riser recliner, which other motors can offer. Single motor chairs tend to be cheaper, due to their reduced versatility, which makes them better suited to those on a budget.

Dual motor

Dual motor recliner risers have two separate motors that work independently of each other, giving you greater flexibility to adjust your position.

One motor controls the backrest while the other controls the footrest. This gives you additional command over your sitting, reclined and rising positions. Initially, the variety of buttons may take you a little playing around with to get used to, but operation is very easy once you are familiar with it.

Dual motor recliners are especially useful for those who have stiffness or soreness in different parts of the body, as you can adjust areas of the chair to relieve pain with greater ease. This makes them ideal for those with health conditions who require greater comfort from their chair.

Quad motor

The most advanced choice on the market is the quad motor. They operate similarly to the dual motor, with one motor operating the backrest and another operating the footrest.

However, they also have third and fourth motors controlling a headrest and lumbar support, both of which are areas that need additional support with advancing age.

The quad motor provides superb functionality, allowing you to achieve a high level of comfort and versatility from your chair, thanks to the wide choice of subtle adjustments that a quad motor allows.
